يمثل النيل ثروة قومية کبرى،سواء بکونه مصدر المياه الاول الذى يوفر الحياة لمصر، او لکونه شريان الحرکة الذى يربط شمال مصر بجنوبها ولکونه المشکل لتاريخها، او نظرا لتميزه البصرى کواحد من اکبر انهار العالم. اما فى القاهرة الکبرى فهو يکتسب اهمية اضافية لکونه المتنفس الرئيسى لسکان القاهرة المکتظة بسکانها والتى تفتقر بشدة للفراغات المفتوحة والترفيهية، مما يجعل من النيل وضفافه مقصدا للترفيه والسياحة لکل الفئات سواء من البسطاء او الاثرياء او من السياح الذين يقيمون فى الفنادق المطلة عليه. فالنيل واحد من اهم المقومات البيئية والسياحية والترفيهية وبالتالى الاقتصادية للقاهرة. ويمثل تطوير ضفاف النيل بالقاهرة مشروعا ذو اهمية کبرى. فالنيل رغم کل امکانياته يعانى من العديد من المشاکل التى تهدر هذه الامکانيات، فالتلوث يهدد صورته البصرية المميزة، تکاثف الانشطة الاقتصادية والعمرانية من حوله بصورة غير منظمة تخفيه احيانا، وتشوه صورته فى کثير من الاحيان، وتتزاحم الحرکة المرورية على کورنيشه وتفتقر ضفافه للمساحة الکافية او الخدمات او التشجير او التنسيق المناسب لدوره الهام للترفيه عن سکان القاهرة وضيوفها. ويهدف هذا المشروع الى الحفاظ على النيل کثروة قومية وکميزة عمرانية کبيرة للقاهرة وتعظيم الاستفادة من امکانياته عمرانيا وبيئيا وسياحيا وترفيهيا واقتصاديا. وذلک عن طريق اعداد مخطط اولى لتطوير ضفاف النيل بالقاهرة الکبرى بطول 45 کم من القناطر الخيرية شمالا الى کوبرى المرازيق جنوبا- بتحديد الاستعمالات المثلى لضفافه واسلوب التعامل معها.
The Nile represents a great national wealth, whether by being the first water source that provides life to Egypt, or because it is the movement's artery that connected northern Egypt with its south and its formation of its history, or because of its visual distinction as one of the largest rivers in the world. Densely populated Greater Cairo severely lacks open and recreational spaces, which makes the Nile and its banks a destination for entertainment and tourism for all groups. The Nile is one of the most important environmental, tourism and recreational ingredients - and thus economic - for Cairo.
The development of the banks of the Nile in Cairo is a project of great importance. The Nile, despite all its capabilities, suffers from many problems and challenges. Pollution threatens its waters as it threatens its distinctive visual image. The intensification of economic and urban activities around it in an unorganized manner distorts its image, and intensifies traffic on the Corniche
This study aims to preserve the Nile as a national wealth, as a great urban advantage for Cairo, and to maximize the utilization of its potential, urban, environmental, tourist, recreational and economic capabilities. The study proposes a master plan for the development of the Nile River Banks in Greater Cairo that identifies optimal uses to achieve the preservation of the Nile River and protect its environmental and economic attributes, while providing the spaces pedestrian paths separated from the movement of cars and solving traffic problems and bottlenecks the Nile corniche
